Tim Alexander and the Edgewood College men's soccer team will look to make some history today in Mequon.
The third-seeded Eagles play second-seeded Milwaukee School of Engineering in a semifinal of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament at 1 p.m. on the campus of Concordia University.
A win would put Edgewood in the NAC final for the first time — the Eagles have lost in the semifinals in each of the conference's first three years — and would give Alexander his 200th career victory, making him just the fifth coach in NCAA history to reach that milestone with both men's and women's teams.
The Raiders (12-5-2) and Edgewood (12-4-3) appear to be two evenly matched sides. MSOE beat the Eagles 2-1 on Oct. 7 in Milwaukee, with a 79th-minute goal by senior Brandon Crozier (Hartland Arrowhead) the difference, and the teams share the No. 9 ranking in this week's NSCAA Division III Central Region poll.
However, the Eagles are 20-8 all-time against MSOE and have won both of the conference tournament matches between the teams, including a 2-0 victory in last year's NAC quarterfinals that avenged a regular-season loss.
The Edgewood attack is keyed by seniors Andriy Apetrey (Wisconsin Dells) and Jerrid Dokey (Green Bay Southwest) and junior Greg Dezell (Oconomowoc). The forwards have accounted for 29 of the Eagles' 38 goals — Apetrey has an NAC-best 11, Dokey 10 and Dezell eight — and they also have combined for 14 assists.
The Raiders, meanwhile, have gotten their goals from a number of players, with six players having scored between three and seven goals. Sophomore Mike Vanek (South Milwaukee) leads the way with seven, while junior Joe Westrich (Racine St. Catherine's) has five and Crozier and freshman Jordan Werner have four apiece.
