President's Cup gears up for 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Madison UnitedRegistration is open for Madison United's 17th annual President's Cup indoor soccer tournament, which is Feb. 13-14 at BreakAway Sports Center in Fitchburg and Keva Sports Center in Middleton.

The event has openings for 84 teams, with preliminary plans calling for 32 teams in Men's Open, 20 in Women's Open, 16 in Men's Over-30, eight in Women's Over-30 and eight in Men's Over-38. Tournament organizers reserve the right to change the number of teams in brackets based on interest.

In 2009, a record 80 teams and nearly 1,000 players participated in the tourney.

It's the second straight year that event organizers are offering a Women's Over-30 bracket; last year, plans for the division fell through when there wasn't enough interest. Those teams will be allowed to have two players between the ages of 25 and 29.

The tournament once again will serve as a qualifier for the National Indoor Soccer Championship, with the top three teams in the Men's Open, Women's Open and Men's Over-30 divisions earning berths in the national events.

The Men's and Women's Open finals are scheduled for March 19-21 in Las Vegas, while the Men's Over-30 championship will be held March 5-7 in Canton, Mich. Qualifying teams are responsible for all costs associated with the national championships.

Madison-based Chichitas won their seventh consecutive President's Cup title in the Women's Open competition in 2009, then went on to win the national championship. The other 2009 President's Cup champions were Milwaukee's Croatian Eagles (Men's Open), Rockford's Forest City (Men's Over-30) and FC Gherkin (Men's Over-38).

The entry fee is $425 per team by check or $435 by credit card through PayPal, and the deadline is Jan. 31. Teams registering by Dec. 15 will receive a $50 discount, lowering the fee to $375 or $385. For more information or to register, visit the President's Cup Web site.
