Despite a 15-4 advantage in shots, the Madison 56ers settled for a 0-0 draw with Appleton's FC Magic in a season-opening friendly Sunday night at Breese Stevens Field.
Goalkeeper Nick Powell (Madison Memorial/Butler) made two saves for the 56ers, who open their National Premier Soccer League Midwest Region schedule on May 30 at the St. Paul Twin Stars. Counterpart Jared Kuehl (Oregon/UW-Platteville) stopped six shots for FC Magic. Madison's lineup featured a mix of returnees and new faces. Among the veterans were Powell; defenders Cale Cooper (Madison West/UW) and Chris Brown (McFarland/UW-Platteville); midfielders Trevor Banks (Madison Memorial), Zack Lambo (former UW), Will Howell (Waunakee/UW-Oshkosh); William Bagayoko (former UW), Eric Meyer (Madison Memorial/Yale); and forwards Henry Aiyenero — the team's leading scorer last year — and Gaelan Fraboni (McFarland).
Cooper was one of four current Badgers in the lineup, as he was joined by Spanish midfielder Pablo Delgado and defenders Taylor Waspi and Brian Bultman, who has moved to the backline after spending his first three seasons at UW as an attacking player. Other newcomers included midfielders Nick Kay (Stevens Point/Marquette), Tyrone Creech (Madison East/UW-Platteville) and Baboucarr Njie (Sun Prairie); forwards Ilya Ksenidi (West Allis Hale/UW-Green Bay) and Will Ziegahn (Missouri State); and goalkeeper Jon Szafranski (St. Mary's, Minn.). FC Magic had several local players on its roster, including midfielder Paul Beach (Sauk Prairie/UW-Oshkosh), forward-midfielder Kevin Crombie (Columbus/Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne) and defender Kevin Jones (Madison Edgewood/St. Norbert).
